If you’ve ever had the privilege of changing the diaper of a baby boy, you might be confused by the subject of this post. To be clear, we’re not discussing those kinds of baby boy sprinkle mishaps.

Actually, if this isn’t your first baby, you probably have a nice assortment of clothing and gear from your previous one or two. Maybe you’re picking out all your baby gear needs on your own. And maybe the idea of having a huge party when you’re really pregnant isn’t sitting well with you. If any of these apply, you might be thinking about a baby sprinkle shower instead of the usual baby shower.

Quick Links

What is a baby sprinkle?

What is a baby sprinkle?

A baby sprinkle is basically an abbreviated baby shower. It still involves guests, gifts, food, and refreshments, but they’re in much smaller amounts than your typical shower. They’re gaining in popularity nationwide so don’t be surprised if you find a baby sprinkle party invitation in your mailbox soon.

Baby sprinkle gift ideas

Baby sprinkle gift ideas

Baby sprinkle gifts tend to be smaller in value and often more practical. Items like wipes, diapers, bibs, and other popular toiletries make great gifts. Bringing a gift for the older sibling is a great way to make everyone feel appreciated. Diapers in general are never a bad idea to those with newborns. Parents will always be needing to eat between feedings, changings, and stealing moments of rest when possible, so a gift of some home cooked meals or food delivery service is also a great practical gift idea.

Baby sprinkle games

With the first hour or so of your sprinkle going to chatting, eating, and opening a few gifts, games can easily fill the remaining time. Some popular games to try include guessing the celebrity baby from photographs, blindfolded diaper changing, playdoh baby making station, and pin the pacifier on the baby.

If you’re not a big game person but want something that can happen throughout the gathering, try games like “Don’t Say Baby.” Whoever goes the longest without saying “Baby” wins the prize. Have guests fill out cards that include parenting advice for the expecting parents. Even if they have one already, they might need advice on managing two or more.

Baby sprinkle ideas

Choosing a theme for your baby sparkle shower might be as easy as a color. Baby girl sprinkle ideas in anything pink will do the trick. Baby boy sprinkle ideas in baby blue will certainly do. Whatever your color may be, baby sprinkle theme ideas can also be based on animals, or nursery rhymes, food, or even floral. One could even go with a cloud theme to match the “sprinkle” event. Decorations with rainbows and clouds are popular as are flowers and raindrops.

Consider a hired venue if you’d rather not handle the cleanup or food and beverages. Outdoor events can be fun if the weather cooperates or a personal at home setting may all be considered.

Capture memories with plenty of photographs

Photographs, besides the sprinkle gifts and empty beverage containers, will be the one thing that lets you remember the fun event. So be sure there’s someone designated to take photos of your baby sprinkle. If not just one person, remind everyone to snap liberally and then create a shared folder for everyone to contribute to. Any one of them could be used to create a personalized thank you card. Companies like Motif make it easy. Putting them a good assortment together in a photo book makes a great piece to revisit the moment whenever you feel like it.

Baby sprinkle invitations

Instead of buying invitations from a store, use any photo of your own like a pregnancy shot to create an invite for the event. You’d be surprised how easy it is. Your guests will be amazed at how customized you were able to make them. They might even save them.

If you or someone else is about to complete another trip around the sun, this story is 100% perfect for you. Just like last year and the year before that one, you’re brainstorming possible birthday present ideas. But instead of getting them something that may or may not fit them properly or something that someone else made, try giving them something you made and is completely unique.

A professionally printed photo book filled with some of your favorite photo memories is a gift that’s special. It’s something you took the time to make. It’s a truly personal gift that shows how much you care. Making printed photo projects is easier than you think with companies like Motif.

Here’s a few birthday photo album ideas to help you create something they’ll always cherish and remember the special person who gave it to them.

Quick Links

Tips & ideas for creating a unique birthday photo book

Instead of worry and fear, feel excited about creating a photo book for a birthday gift. You’ve got a ton of great photos to create your gift already on your camera or phone. Photos have a great way of taking you back to a moment in time. One could sit with your birthday friend scrolling through your phone with a lot of pinching and spreading on photos. Sound like fun? Really? Well how about paging through a professionally printed photo book complete with all the details of each special photo memory? Forget skipping past the duplicates or blurry shots because the book has all the best shots.

If the latter sounds like a way better option, here’s a few simple ideas to help make your birthday photo book really shine.

Add text of your favorite memories

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Yet sometimes, the words escape us. Depending on how long ago the memory was and how good your memory is, some valuable details right next to that picture can be very, very handy. If you can’t remember the name of the lake near that mountain with the park ranger who told you to check out that thing, a helpful sentence or two right next to the photo would fill in all those gaps.

Include embarrassing photos

Embarrassing photos are birthday gold. Nothing brings a smile and some laughter like a silly photo of your birthday boy or girl on a quality printed page. And that beautiful photo book filled with amazing photos and a few embarrassing ones gets saved and put on the bookshelf. Ask yourself how much is a bunch of people laughing together worth? Some might say that’s priceless. Include the embarrassing photos in your birthday photo book.

Choose their favorite color theme

If your birthday person is a fan of certain colors, the Motif photo book app lets you choose whatever color you’d like in the book. Do they have a favorite team? Create their birthday photo book with their favorite colors in the background and part of the theme or pattern. Favorite colors only add to their enjoyment of the photos you filled the book with.

Tell a story

There is a story behind every photo. But sometimes, a paragraph or two really helps tell a better story. If you’re making a 1st birthday photo album, a written record of your first year is something you’ll have forever. They’d also make great gifts for grandparents and other family members. Imagine digging that photo book out a few years down the road for a good read.

Include their loved ones

And of course you include photos of loved ones. Nobody really goes through life alone so the people important to us belong in your birthday photo book. It’s made for one person but is really best enjoyed and shared together. Even if you’re enjoying it alone it’s easy to be reminded of the important people in your life.

Milestone photo books ideas

In addition to the random birthday gift, milestone birthdays such as the 1st, 18th, 30th, 40th, 50th and so on make perfect birthday gifts. They’re great opportunities to span the time with photos collected in one professionally printed photo book. It seems there are never a shortage of photos throughout our lives. Putting them all in one place helps document the years you’re celebrating.

Below are a few ideas for some of the more popular milestones.

18th birthday photo album

They grow up so fast. It just seemed like yesterday when you were changing their diaper. Now they’re asking to borrow the car and looking forward to moving away for college. It’s a really good bet there are tons of photos that span them crawling around in diapers, to their first day of school, to them posing with their freshly minted driver’s license.

Consider assembling another photo book containing photos of their school years as a graduate from college gift.

30th birthday photo album

Group of energetic young people dancing at a party in a nightclub

30 years old to many is considered being an adult, though that may be debated. Many who reach that age might be feeling as if their fun years have passed. Well that’s not true, but collecting all the photos of the fun things you did in your 20’s is a great birthday gift idea. So many of those photos live on your social media feeds so they’re easy to get into a printed photo book. That book is easy to thumb through while sitting on your sofa because that’s what adults have. The futon is gone and you probably have a nice book shelf to store your printed photo albums.

50th birthday photo album

This book should have some size to it. It’s an opportunity to look back at the chapters of life they’ve experienced so far. It’s a great way to feel good about what you’ve accomplished. Consider including all the things you might from an 18th and 30th birthday album, and then add your new family photos, travel photos, and anything else from your 40s. Like we mentioned earlier, there’s going to be quite a bit to put in this photo book.

50th birthday photo albums make for great coffee table books that visitors are often surprised by. You might also find yourself impressed by everything it contains.

How to design your own photo book

Creating these birthday photo albums is not as difficult as you might think. The Motif photo app works within your Apple Photos app where almost all your photos already exist. Just assemble the photos you want in your book into a “birthday photo book” album in your Photos app.

Then, on your Mac laptop or desktop, open Photos and select the photo or image you’d like to create your birthday photo book with. Right-click or in the File menu select Create then the Photo Book, and then Motif

On your iPhone/iPad, simply open the Motif app and then select New in the upper right corner, then choose the product Photo Book.

From there, the Motif app springs into motion and magically places all your photos into chronological order into a photo book format. It will also select the best photos from your group and prevent having duplicates in your book. Then, you get to customize it with text, color, themes, and patterns to make it the perfect birthday gift.

Bring your best photos to life with Motif.

Experience how easy creating personalized photo projects is with Motif. Our photo project app seamlessly works with Apple Photos in macOS and iOS. We do all the complicated stuff leaving the fun creative freedom to you.

Your family’s history is slowly disappearing. To prove this statement, start listing your parents along with their maiden names. Then list their parents including their maiden names. Are you able to name their siblings, too? Next would be great-grandparents. How far back were you able to remember? How many people did you have to ask?

Quick Links

It’s not uncommon to have a limited knowledge of your family tree. Unless someone before you took the time to put it to paper, family ancestries are mostly committed to memory. Unless they’re chronicled, it’s only a matter of time before parts of that story are lost for good.

The good news is you can do something about it now. With a little footwork and research, a family ancestry photo book can serve as the foundation of your family’s rich history. Family photo books can then be handed down from one generation to the next. They serve as a permanent record that can be updated as generations are added to the family.

Ideas for Creating Your Family Tree

Unique family tree ideas exist with every family because every family is unique. Should you create a family tree, how you organize it is completely up to you. Family tree photo books can be organized in a number of ways.

Family stories span decades, even centuries, so organizing chronologically is a popular and easy format. The other “stems” from the tree analogy which organizes families by “branches.” People from different backgrounds come together and create families. The two branches have different stories yet become part of one family tree.

In addition to chronological and family branches, location is another interesting way to tell your family story. This can be especially interesting if you’re lucky enough to have relatives in countries your family emigrated from.

Again, this is your family photo book. If you want to use a little of every method in telling your story, so be it.

All family tree ideas begin with information and photos. You might be thinking this will be such an amazing surprise to everyone if you make this yourself. If you or one other person has all the information needed, you’ll have quite the surprise. However, letting your family know you’re creating this will most likely ensure a more thorough record of your family’s history.

So, reach out to your family and get them thinking. Get them searching their archives for photos and information. Spend time with the most senior members to uncover their earliest recollections. If you’re lucky, you’ll find boxes and envelopes of sepia tone photographs to add to all the digital ones you already have. Take notes about names, dates, towns, countries, stories, and unique facts. Record your conversations.

Grab a big piece of paper and list the oldest set of parents you can find at the bottom. Great-grandparents or even great-great-grandparents if that’s what you have. They will become the trunk of your family tree.

The task may seem daunting at first, but after you cover a few family members the rest will be easier. Your family tree will begin to take shape.

How to Make Your Family Tree Photo Book

The photos, information, and the imagery you’re able to create all belong in a printed photo book. Creating one with a reputable company that’s been printing them for decades is important. Your end result will be a high-quality photo book you’ll have for generations and a digital backup of it should anything happen to it. Here’s what you’ll need to create your family photo book.

Download Motif

The Motif app is free to download to your Mac laptop/desktop and iPhone/iPad. The app works seamlessly with your Apple Photos. It’s also free to create with. You’re only charged if you want to purchase one of your photo creations. Plus, they’re always running promotions with discounts so it’s worth submitting your email address.

Get your images into Apple Photos

If you happen to collect a trove of printed photos from a family member, you’ll need to make them digital. Either scan them or photograph the printed photos as best you can. Assemble your collection of digital photos for the project into a designated folder in Apple Photos.

Creating in the app

On your Mac, open your Apple Photos app and find your folder containing all your collected family tree photos. Select the folder and then in the File menu select Create, Book, then Motif.

On your iPhone or iPad, open the Motif app and select Photo Book. Choose the size and type of book then select your group of family tree photos.

In both the OS and iOS version, Motif’s smart technology flows your photos into your selected book template. You’ll be surprised how quickly your book takes shape. Then you can use Motif’s design tools that let you change your book layout, colors, themes, patterns, and add text.

Proof, proof, proof, then checkout.

Once your project is complete, be sure the info is accurate and spelled properly. Then click or tap the Checkout button. You’ll notice Motif points out photos that are low resolution and other potential errors before your project is printed. Address these issues to ensure a quality finished family photo book. Enter your shipping and payment info and complete the transaction.

From that point, leave the rest to Motif. Their skilled press operators and bindery department create and ship a finished photo book that will likely surprise you. At the next family gathering, share and enjoy what you’ve all created.

A Unique Gift For A Loved One

The book you created will serve as the record of your family’s history. It’s a foundation that, with regular updating, will only grow as your family grows. Should this happen, imagine your great-great-grandchildren opening a volume of their family’s history that potentially spans centuries.

Your creation makes excellent family tree gift ideas. It’s a keepsake that’s always great to revisit and never goes out of style. It doesn’t need batteries or assembly for that matter. You’ve already put it all together. Visiting your Motif account and printing several more can easily create thoughtful gifts for family members.

Bring your best photos to life with Motif.

If you’re an Apple product user, it apparently pays to let them know what kind of iOS features you’d really like to see in future releases. Apple’s product teams are experts in developing better ways to use their operating system. However, any company who wants to stay in business listens to what their customers are looking for in product improvements. So when a screen pops up on your device asking if you’d like to rate and/or review a product, this is your opportunity to shape something to meet your needs.

Quick Links

In the case of iOS 15 features, the new/updated feature list is quite impressive to say the least. Like, did you ever wish there was a special notifications setting that could help you focus better? Well the new Find Focus feature allows users to filter notifications to help improve work productivity, family time, and also sleep time without missing what’s important.

We’ll cover more iOS 15 features later in this article, but the one feature that everyone’s all excited about is the iOS 15 FaceTime screen share called SharePlay.

What is SharePlay?

Apple-iPhone12Pro-iOS15-TV-Expanse-Messages-

SharePlay on iOS 15 is ‌FaceTime‌’s biggest new feature. For the most part, it’s basically a way for you to do more on ‌FaceTime‌ calls with your friends and family. Being able to share your screen over FaceTime has been high on the list of the most requested iPhone and iPad features over the years. The other reasons people want this iOS 15 screen share feature include easier tech support, playing games and puzzles together, and more.

Screen Share on FaceTime with iOS 15.1

iOS 15 FaceTime lets you watch a favorite TV show or movie on Apple TV+ and other streaming services in sync together including all the comments, laughter, and OMG’s. Create a FaceTime dance party by sharing music if you can’t be together.  If you’re having technical issues with your device, simply share your screen to let an Apple support expert take care of it remotely.

SharePlay was introduced in iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, and tvOS 15.1, after being delayed from the initial launch versions of the software. It will also work with ‌macOS Monterey‌ in a future update.

9 iOS 15 Features to Try On FaceTime

In addition to the wonders of SharePlay, the iOS 15 control center also lets you set up your FaceTime to fit your needs. Here’s just a few new/updated features:

Portrait mode

Inspired by portraits taken in the Camera app, Portrait mode in FaceTime blurs your background to put the focus on you.

Grid view

Lets you see people in your Group FaceTime calls in same size tiles, and highlights the current speaker. You’ll see up to six faces in the grid at a time.

Spatial audio

Creates a sound field that helps conversations flow just as they would face to face. Spatial audio spreads out voices to sound like they’re coming from the direction in which they’re positioned on the call.

Voice Isolation mode

This microphone mode spotlights your voice by using machine learning to identify ambient noises and block them out. It’s a great feature when there’s a fire truck driving by or a dog barking in the next room.

FaceTime links

Invite anyone into a FaceTime call using a web link you can share anywhere.

Join FaceTime on the web

Even friends without Apple devices can join you for one-to-one and Group FaceTime calls straight from their browser instantly — no login necessary.

Calendar integration

Generate a web link for a FaceTime call while creating an event in Calendar, so everyone knows exactly where to meet and when.

Mute alerts

Be heard with this feature as it lets you know when you’re talking while muted. Tap the alert to quickly unmute.

Zoom

An optical zoom control for your back camera helps you zero in on what matters when you’re on a FaceTime call.

Map, Memojis, Messages & More

In addition to FaceTime improvements, the new operating system includes an improved Apple Maps for iOS 15. Experience the natural beauty of Earth with an interactive 3D globe, including enhanced details for mountain ranges, deserts, forests, oceans and more. A new dedicated driving map highlights traffic and incidents. Immersive walking directions get where you’re going with step-by-step directions shown in augmented reality.

Redesigned public transport now shows key bus routes. And when you’re approaching your stop, Maps notifies you that it’s almost time to disembark. Nearby public transport lets users get one-tap access to all departures that are near them. They can even pin their favorite lines so that they always show up at the top if they are nearby.

New iOS 15 Memojis have updated clothing with over 40 outfit choices to reflect your style, mood or the season — and choose up to three different colors. You can now select a different color for your left eye and your right eye. There are three new glasses options, including heart, star and retro shapes with color options for the frame and lenses. Stickers, headgear and accessibility options are also available.

New iOS Message has content sent to you via Messages automatically appear in a new “Shared with You” section in the corresponding app. View messages when it’s convenient for you. Shared with You will be featured in Photos, Safari, Apple News, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and the Apple TV app.

iOS 15 CarPlay through Siri can announce incoming messages. You can turn announcements on or off when a message is read and Siri will remember your preference. Or you can set announcements off or always on through Settings.

Update To iOS 15 and get more from Motif

By updating to iOS 15 before the holiday season begins, you’re adding better tools to share in your gift giving and receiving. Find your favorite holiday program like A Christmas Story, or Elf, or whatever movie you and your family love, and coordinate a watch party via SharePlay. Bring your family together wherever they may be.

FaceTime can easily make gift opening so much better for those who shipped gifts and can’t be there in person. See their joy as they open your gift by streaming the moment. If you made them a photo book filled with favorite memories, share that moment as if you were right there beside them. And while you’re at it, record it and share your opening moment with Motif. Sometimes the best trips begin at the driveway. Not the ones that lead to an airport or train station, it’s the trips that wander the open road. In the United States alone, there are over 4 million miles to explore. Of course, some include those that run past your house or a non-descript strip mall, but many take you through some very beautiful places.

Road trip photography lets you capture the sights you encounter along your way. It’s also a great opportunity to capture in car photos while the journey is happening. The vehicle and its occupants are a big part of the journey.  Open road photography is an art form you can practice and pairs oh so well with travel by car, truck, camper, or whatever you drive or ride.

Here’s a few pointers to make sure your next road trip pics capture everything along your travels.

Plan Your Trip: Pre Trip Location Scouting and Planning

thumbtacks marking different locations on map.traveling, explore the world.

Knowing where you’re going is key to a successful road trip. There are also better times to visit those places. If you’re looking to capture some great beach sunset photos, be sure that beach faces the setting sun. Some beaches are best for sunrise photos.

Research the places and routes you’ll take getting there. Make sure your gear is working properly. That includes your vehicle, your camera equipment, and ways to power your equipment and backups. Have a map handy in case you’re lucky enough to find places your navigation doesn’t work. Bring a travel tripod to take smooth panoramas.

Stay Organized

It’s tough to stay organized on a road trip, especially a long one. You’ll be juggling memory cards, batteries, lenses, filters, a travel tripod, not to mention clothes, snacks, and whatever else we travel with. It can add up to a lot of stuff, so ask yourself what you really need to bring.

Keeping your photo gear simple and light makes you more likely to grab your camera and take a photo when you see something interesting! The best road trip pictures often end up being of things you almost didn’t take a picture of. Photo gear that’s accessible lets you easily take a picture that you might not have bothered with otherwise.

Start Early

Migrating geese flying in V formation

If your road trip is happening during a busy travel season, the most photogenic locations get crowded quickly. So get up early and capture the unspoiled beauty of nature or even a city street without extra subjects appearing in your shot. Experience shooting during the morning golden hour, a special time of day shortly after sunrise when the tones of light are very warm, and bathe everything in a beautiful golden light.

Think Before You Shoot

It’s easy to lift the camera and shoot. Your favorite, go-to setting is ready to capture the shot, but getting stuck in a routine can be bad for creativity. To stay fresh, pause before you take any road trip images and consider a few things:

  • Check Composition – Capture more than a snapshot by making sure your composition is strong. Think about your subject placement and your foreground & background elements. Are you practicing the Rule of Thirds
  • Where’s the Light Coming From? – Light is everything in a photo, so be aware of where it’s coming from to avoid underexposing or overexposing your road trip photos.
  • How Could the Shot be Improved? – Take a quick look and see if there’s anything you can do to improve your photo. Would a different position give you a better angle? What if someone poses in it to give the scene a sense of scale?
  • Horizon Straight? – A crooked one sticks out like a sore thumb. You could fix it later, but you’ll end up cropping out part of your photo to straighten the horizon.

Include The Road

Up Hill Road Towards the Horizon With Water Tower Above the Trees in a Colorful Sunset

Nothing captures the magic of open road photography better than, well…the open road. Including a stretch of lonely highway in your photo can really convey where the wheels have actually been. And please, take photos only where it’s safe to do so. These shots also create great in-between imagery of your various destinations if you want to tell a story with your photos.

Take notes as to where the photos were taken if possible. Record the names of the towns, people, and things you photograph. This may come in handy when chronicling your road trip story.

Photograph Everything

Amazing landscapes and prominent monuments are great subjects to include in your road trip photos, but don’t overlook the little moments like setting up camp or the steaming coffee cup at a local diner. Do not forget photos of locals from your travels. Along with their individual character, they’re also apt to share spots you don’t find in the brochure.

Look for funny road trip pictures to include with the scenic ones. They add humor to a sometimes monotonous element of being on the road, mile after mile. Throw a pair of rabbit ears on an unsuspecting photo subject. Capture someone with a mouthful of sandwich.

Don’t Forget Your Road Trip Photos

Once the car is back in the garage and the maps and gear are stowed for the next trip, do something with all those road trip pictures. After posting and sharing some, while the story and the details are still fresh in your memory, create a portfolio photo book featuring your best photos and every detail that helps tell your road trip story.

It’s easy with Motif because it works seamlessly with Apple Photos. And, your best photos will be printed on the best quality paper by an industry leader in professional printing.

Pick up your phone and open the photos app. Scroll down a few times until you find the photos from a special event like a birthday party, a wedding, a new baby, a holiday or trip. Have you ever tried to share that with anyone using only your phone? It’s a bit tricky and of course limited by the size of the screen. Sometimes the details of that photo aren’t as fresh in your memory as they once were.

But imagine the idea of opening a professionally printed book featuring your favorite photos. The details of the photos printed right there on the page. That’s the beauty of a printed photo book. Plus, you decide what goes on every page. You decide what’s printed on the cover and spine of your photo album.

This story serves as inspiration to find the perfect title for your photobook creations.

A bookshelf could be filled with volumes of Christmas, holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, and more. Instead of encyclopedias you could have your family story on hand.

Important reasons to record family memories

Memories fade if you let them. As a member of a family it’s kind of your duty to keep family stories alive. Family photos can easily be printed into high-quality photo albums that stand the test of time. You also get a perspective of how far you’ve come. “Back in the old days,” is always a good thing to revisit. If you were a fan of traditional scrapbooking, you probably had a favorite brand of glue, types of paper, and several pairs of scissors to practice your craft. Now you probably have a more digital approach to scrapbooking. Pixels and software are now the glue of modern scrapbooking. There are many out there who practice hybrid scrapbooking by using a bit of both. Whatever camp you belong to, this article covers the basics of digital scrapbooking.

What Is Digital Scrapbooking

By definition, digital scrapbooking is the creation of a new 2D artwork by re-combining various graphic elements. It is a form of scrapbooking that is done using a personal computer, digital or scanned photos and computer graphics software. So why digital scrapbooking become so popular? Well, a lot of people don’t like leaving photos hidden on their phones or devices. Printed scrapbooks and photo albums are simply easier to enjoy. Plus, they’ve become extremely easy to make with the leading digital photo book app by Motif.

How to Digital Scrapbook for Beginners

Working from home

If you’re wondering how to start digital scrapbooking, the digital scrapbooking supplies required are few. Photos are the primary ingredient, then a computer with photo editing software. You could do this on a tablet or phone but a bigger screen of a laptop or desktop really helps. With digital scrapbooking apps you can create your own designs from scratch. Or, premade  templates are available online from sites such as iStock or Envato Elements. They’re also great resources if you’re wondering how to create digital scrapbooking elements.

What Is the Best Digital Scrapbooking Software

To create digital scrapbooking graphics you’ll need some software. There’s quite a few options available and most don’t take long to get the hang of using. One of the more popular platform brands is Adobe. They’ve been the industry standard for decades with professional designers. Adobe Photoshop is a subscription based platform that costs about $20 a month. Photoshop Elements is an entry-level digital scrapbooking app that’s available for purchase and more affordable. Tutorials are always a great way to learn how to use Photoshop templates and actions in digital scrapbooking.

Gimp is another great design app that’s actually free. Paint Shop Pro is another app to consider as well as Forever Artisan.  Most of these apps offer free trials so you can take it for a spin before you buy.

What to Do with Your Digital Scrapbook Creations

After choosing from the several digital scrapbooking apps, downloading a few templates, you’re ready for some digital scrapbooking. Select a group of photos that have special meaning and are deserving more than a basic existence somewhere on your camera roll. Soon you’ll find the stories coming to life again. So too are the people in those photos.

However, it’s difficult to gather people around a screen all the time to really appreciate the moment. Download Motif to your Mac and let our smart technology transform your digital scrapbooking into a printed photo album. Turn the page of a photo book that’s easy to share. Better yet, give as one thoughtful gift. It works natively within Apple Photos and has some serious editing capabilities to compliment what you achieve in your scrapbooking app.

In photography, dynamic range refers to the difference between the lightest and darkest tones in a photo. Stand outside during the twilight hour and notice the way shadows and light land on the street, homes, or in a cityscape. Then, try to take photos of the same scenes.

It’s not always easy to capture what the naked eye sees accurately with a camera. That’s because the human eye can see a much greater dynamic range than a camera. Areas such as dynamic range and low light performance are where eyes genuinely shine. The difference between the darkest shadow detail and the brightest highlight detail is measured in lens T-stops. The best cameras on the market have a dynamic range of around 15 stops on average. However, the human eye can perceive 21 stops of dynamic range. Eyes can pick up details in deep shadow and significantly brighter areas from any given scene simultaneously.

What is HDR Photography?

HDR (high dynamic range) photography is a technique that involves capturing multiple images of the same scene using different exposure values. Then the images are combined into a single image representing the full range of tonal values within the scene.

Instead of just taking one photo, HDR photography uses three photos (or five, seven, or more) taken at different exposures. If colors and shadows in a scene seem too busy or difficult to capture in one photograph, HDR imaging is the solution. Multiple photos captured with varying exposure values is the best way to get the various tones in the scene. Then, special software processes those images, interpreting the result to create an image that contains far more detail than is possible with a single photograph with one exposure.

When Would You Use HDR Photography?

Use HDR Photography for any shooting situations with tricky lighting conditions. HDR is used outdoors with various degrees of light and shadow. Use HDR indoors when natural and artificial light competes to highlight an interior space. Here are some ways to try HDR photography:

Landscape Photography

HDR is perfect for landscape photography. Landscape scenes are often high contrast, with the foreground much darker than the sky. The best times for an HDR shoot are at dawn, early in the morning, or when the sun has set. The “golden hour” is also prime time to shoot HDR photography outside, when the sun is low on the horizon. The sun’s position creates an extreme contrast between the parts still hit by the light and the ones in the shadows.

Silhouette Photography

If a subject is backlit (with the light source behind it), use HDR so the focus doesn’t appear as a dark silhouette against a bright background. HDR also works well when photographing a shaded subject against a bright sky. Rather than choosing between a subject that’s too dark or a sky that’s too bright, HDR provides clear views of both. If photographing an object in direct sunlight, dark shadows are likely to be cast within the scene. Using HDR brightens up the shadows while ensuring the highlights aren’t over-exposed.

Interior Photography

HDR is popular for photographing buildings because it’s best used to capture a lot more detail, including architecture, cityscapes, and real estate. Real estate photographers often find themselves working in very challenging conditions. Property exterior or interior is easy to shoot because they are static subjects. However, photography can be challenging concerning what lighting looks best in a scene. HDR photography allows photographers to get details in both highlights and shadows by combining several images into one final image during post-production.

HDR photography can capture scenes where lighting is difficult to capture the essence of a scene.

How to create an HDR image

Photographers can take HDR images with either a DSLR camera or an iPhone. While the mechanics of taking HDR photos is different for both an iPhone and digital camera, the results of several images merging into one HDR image are the same. Use a tripod for both an iPhone camera and digital camera when taking HDR photos, so there’s no camera movement. Blurred edges or images occur from movement. It causes the individual images that form an HDR picture not to line up correctly.

Creating an HDR image with an iPhone camera

Before you open the Camera app, check your HDR settings in the Settings app. Go to Settings > Camera. Make sure the Smart HDR (Auto HDR on older iPhones) toggle is switched off. If Smart HDR is on, the HDR option won’t be available in the Camera app. Make sure the Keep Normal Photo option is switched on. “Keep Normal Photo” tells the iPhone to save a non-HDR version of the photo too.

Open the Camera app, and ensure the HDR icon at the top of the screen is switched on (the icon appears without a line through it when it’s on). With HDR switched on, the iPhone automatically captures HDR photos when the shutter button is pressed. The individual images, which may be saved depending on the operating system and model, can take up storage space. Therefore, make sure to change the setting to discard the original photos and only keep the HDR image.

It takes slightly longer to capture an HDR photo than a regular one on an iPhone. The camera has to capture three images at different exposures and combine them into a single picture. Because of the extra time required to take an HDR photo, it’s more likely that the iPhone will move slightly. Movement results in a blurred image. For this reason, it’s essential to hold an iPhone still or mount your phone on a tripod while taking HDR pictures.

Exposure bracketing takes 3+ exposures of the same shot to be combined into an HDR photograph.

Exposure bracketing with a digital camera

Capturing a series of photos assembled into a final HDR image is called exposure bracketing. Bracketing means taking more than one photo while moving the camera’s range arrows around (setting different exposure levels). The more images in the bracket, the more professional an HDR photo will look.

Digital cameras allow you to set bracket exposures automatically. To set auto-exposure bracketing, look for a button labeled AEB (Automatic Exposure Bracketing) or BKT on the back of the camera, or search for it in the camera menu. Most cameras offer three-shot auto-exposure bracketing, though some models allow for five-shot and even seven-shot brackets.

Set the bracketing to 2 exposure value (EV) increments. The first photo you take will be too dark, the second photo will be correctly exposed, and the third photo will be too light or over-exposed (the shutter has to be pressed three times for all exposures to complete). If your camera does not have a bracketing setting, you can manually adjust the aperture. You can also go into the menu settings and manually adjust the exposure value (EV) settings between shots.

Can you shoot HDR in RAW?

When shooting in HDR, set the capture file type to RAW (instead of jpg, etc.). RAW photos are like a film negative. RAW images are better to shoot in HDR than a jpg because there’s more data to use when editing images. RAW files contain much more light information than a jpg image. This allows many more adjustments to shadows and highlights. It helps fix errors in exposure that would never be possible with a jpg.

HDR photography can result in dramatic images after post-processing.

HDR software

The beauty of HDR photography comes together in post-processing. HDR software creates the dramatic colored and tonal effects of images after blending the several exposures. Be sure that the photos have the correct exposures, are not blurry, and capture the effect desired. HDR-specific software is used for the merging and tone-mapping stage of HDR sets. After merging the images in HDR software, finishing touches can be added to the HDR image in software like Lightroom or Capture One.

Photoshop is also popular to use for final touch-ups of HDR images. Use a custom “Curves” adjustment or the brush tool on the Curves mask to adjust an image. Try the Shadow/Highlight tool to perfect shading, as well as the Spot Healing Brush to blend away something small.

HDR photography is a unique way to capture subjects you’ve never tried before because of their difficulty to capture. Try HDR photography on your next sunset beach walk, hike, or even family event. Then, save the images in a photo book from Motif. Whether it’s a wedding photo book, ski vacation keepsake, or commemorating a great year, Motif makes it easy to pull all your memories together into one place.

Photographers often pay close attention to the background of images, which gives a broad view behind a photo subject. Finding an interesting foreground is just as important. A well-planned foreground transforms a flat, one-dimensional composition into an engaging image that’s full of depth and dimension. Foreground creates a more true-to-life scene that makes the viewer want to jump in and become a part of it.

The person in the foreground leads the viewer right into the desert behind him.

What is the Foreground?

In photography, the foreground is the part of the photography subject that’s closest to the camera. The foreground serves as the introduction to a larger image. It sets the stage for the rest of the photo. The foreground is the first element to grab a viewer’s attention, leading their eyes right into a scene.

The human eye distinguishes between elements and determines depth in a scene, but a camera flattens the background and foreground. Because a photograph is a 2D version of a 3D reality, a good picture should create the illusion of depth. Setting up the foreground well puts the subject into context. Use the foreground to add to the scene and highlight the subject of the image. Including more foreground enhances the subject and its environment.

The tree in the foreground moves the eye to the middle ground, then the mountains in the background.

Foreground, Middleground, Background

Almost every photograph has a foreground and a background. Many compositions also have a middle-ground. The foreground is the section closest to the camera; the background is the section farthest away. The middle-ground falls somewhere between, connecting them.

In a well-composed photograph, the foreground transitions into the middle-ground, which then transitions into the background. The foreground can be sharp in focus compared to the middle ground and background. Alternatively, the foreground can be out of focus with the in-focus subject in the middle ground – the background used to support the main subject.

A great way to connect the foreground, middle ground, and background of an image is to use leading lines. Leading lines direct the viewer’s eyes through the photograph. Look for elements like stones, flowing water, set structures (such as a row of buildings). Leading lines are anything that creates a defined direction. Use these to make a connection between the layers, which give the composition depth.

Color contrast in the foreground takes a viewer’s eye to the darkest point and the background.

How to Use Foreground

In a composed photo, the foreground should never be empty. A point of interest should fill the foreground. Points of interest include flowers, a person, sculpture, or anything sitting close to the camera. Look to create interest in the subject by using what’s in front of it.  Negative space can also add to the image.

Color contrast is also used to set up the foreground. A dark foreground can frame a lighter subject and lead the viewer into the scene. When the foreground is darker than the main point of interest or has rich colors or tones, it draws the viewer’s attention and makes the subject pop.

Wildlife in the foreground gives context and gives viewers a chance to see the whole environment.

Foreground Subjects

Foreground techniques are frequently used with landscape or wildlife photography. Including a foreground in landscape shots creates depth by adding dimension. The foreground image can present the subject with a dramatic frame, color, or texture. With wildlife photography, the foreground draws the viewer’s eye toward the subject and minimizes distractions found in the background by making it out of focus. When everything is in focus, the viewer may not discern what is supposed to be the image’s focal point.

A blurry foreground frame makes a more dramatic portrait subject within it.

Foreground Framing

Foreground framing occurs when elements of the foreground are used to frame the central subject. Foreground framing helps create eye-catching portrait photography. A great way to try foreground framing is with photos in Portrait Mode on an iPhone camera. In Portrait Mode, the subject will be in sharp focus, while the frame and background will be out of focus. This blurred effect makes the subject stand out within the frame.

Try highlighting the foreground to take photos of subjects in ways you never thought you could capture. Whether taking your camera on a safari or familiar hiking trails, keep those memories well-organized with a photo book from Motif.

When cameras became standard equipment on all smartphones, the popularity of photography exploded. You no longer needed to have an actual camera or film on hand to capture photos.  Since their introduction, the cameras found on smartphones are rivaling the quality of standard and digital cameras. This has transformed everyone into photographers. At some point the selfie or the standard, “smile, say cheese,” type of shots can become a bit pedestrian.

To break out and invigorate your photography results, or possibly make photography a career option, explore these various types of photography.

Portrait Photography

Portrait Photography

Portrait photography captures the character of a subject within a photograph. Using the correct camera settings, compositions, angles, lighting, backdrops, and poses, you can capture the subject’s expressions, emotions, and character. It’s about creating a portrait that evokes feelings and captivates viewers’ attention. Portrait photography is often used to promote oneself in their line of work. The photo above shows a young architect in his environment where he practices his trade. Self-portraits and silhouettes, as well as headshots, also fall under this genre.

Portrait photography is a great starting point for aspiring professional photographers. Creating a great portfolio of quality shots can lead to family photography, wedding photography and even fashion and product photography.

Landscape Photography

Sunset over the Sun

Landscape photography is the art of capturing images that embody the essence of nature and the outdoors. Incredible landscape photography transports the viewer and gives them a sense of “being there.” As a landscape photographer, the viewer needs to connect with the photographer’s emotions taking the photo.

Capturing the great outdoors focuses on trees, deserts, beaches, mountain ranges, lakes, rivers, and all other aspects of the natural world. Landforms, weather, changing seasons, and ambient light are all aspects of this photographic niche. Wildlife photography often overlaps with this genre. Landscape photography also includes shooting man-made features or changes to the landscape like farmlands, orchards, and gardens. However, many purists choose to focus on shots that show pure natural scenes, devoid of human influence or activity.

Adjusting your depth of field, shutter speed, and aperture and using different lenses or filters can create various effects on landscape imagery. Tripods are great tools to help image stabilization especially with panoramic shots.

Wedding Photography

Photosession of stylish wedding couple on catholic church

Wedding photography is a mixture of many other types of photography. It incorporates portraiture, family and group photography, documentary, event photography, and close-up images. Wedding photography requires various equipment and preparation, especially when switching from one photography style to another throughout an event.

Wedding photography can be pretty intense because you’re trying to get the best shot you can on the first try and not really getting a second chance in some situations. Wedding photographers have to be quick on their feet, moving around during the reception and ceremony. They also have to be adaptable, ready to shoot outdoors on a sunny day and indoors for dimly lit receptions and dances. Couples will expect the direction from the photographer for posing shots and settings, so the photographer must be confident and communicate well with the bride and groom.

It’s a challenging job which can be very rewarding. You’re capturing the moment that couple will have to remember in a wedding photo book forever.

Macro Photography

Pomegranate fruit grain closeup

Macro photography is one of the more unique types of photography that involves photographing small objects to make them look larger, or even life-sized, in the photo. Macro photography subjects include flowers, fruit and small insects, which aren’t typically seen up close with the naked eye. This type of photography brings out details in jewelry and other inanimate objects like water droplets, everyday items such as fabrics or feathers, toys, eyes, jewelry, and other abstract patterns and textures.

Macro photography requires specialized lenses to capture a true reproduction ratio of the subject matter, with depth of field and lighting being key considerations in adjusting the shot. Extension tubes can also be used to extend lenses for that up-close and personal capture.

Boudoir Photography

Boudoir photography captures intimate and romantic images of subjects. They take place in a bedroom or dressing room environment. Or as the French say, in the “boudoir.” A boudoir session is a photography session where you wear sexy outfits, lingerie, dresses, or even go scantily clad. Boudoir photography can be a gift to a partner on the occasion of an engagement or wedding.

Nude Photography

Nude photography is the creation of any photograph which contains an image of a nude or semi-nude person, or an image suggestive of nudity. Nude photography is undertaken for a variety of purposes, including educational uses, commercial applications and artistic creations.

Nude photography, like boudoir photography, can also be used as a gift to a partner on the occasion of an engagement or wedding. Nude photography celebrates the beauty of the human body and human form.

Black and White Photography

Black and white photography focuses on capturing an image with no color. This can be done one of two ways: through a camera setting or through editing a color image afterward. Monochrome images that use minimal amounts of lighting also fall under this category. In the beginning (of photography), every photo captured was black and white or varying shades of sepia. Once technology advanced and color photography became all the rage, black and white photography lost its popularity.

Now, capturing classic, timeless, and elegant shots, black and white photography is mainly considered fine art photography. It’s a powerful and challenging way to capture a subject without the support of the full color spectrum. Art films and other motion pictures also sometimes make use of black and white as the chosen aesthetic, producing a nostalgic or vintage vibe.

Fine Art Photography

Fine art photography is created by an artist by means of photography to bring an idea, concept, message, or emotion to life in imagery. It is meant to fulfill the creative vision of the artist, conveying a specific feeling to the viewer through the shot. These images are often framed and displayed as art on walls in the same way a painting would be. Fine art photography is also often displayed for sale.

Sometimes fine art photography overlaps with other genres of photography such as photojournalism and fashion photography. Ansel Adams is considered one of the most famous fine art photographers with his stunning black-and-white photography landscapes captured in national parks.

Stock Photography

If you’ve ever perused the websites like iStock, Getty, Shutterstock, or Stocksy to name a few, you know what stock photography is. It’s one of the fastest-growing photography business ideas out there. The photographer captures images for websites that sell their images for them.

Companies, photographers and bloggers buy these images to use on their own site. Kinda like this blog and the images you see in this post. It makes posting images more affordable than having to capture the image yourself.

This covers basically all types of photography. It includes portraits, weddings, advertising shots, and landscapes. Anything that is sellable is on the stock photography websites.

Product Photography

This branch of commercial photography captures objects for advertisement uses. You may find product shots in catalogues and brochures, or online. Product photography often includes jewellery, cosmetics, clothing, packaged goods, and food images to name a few. Product photographers can get their start as retouchers in product photography studios. They learn to edit or “retouch” photos taken to correct any color or image imperfections. Or, just begin getting comfortable with your own editing software with your own photos.
